Gunny once had a home and he had an owner. While maybe it wasn't the best home, it was good enough for Gunny to be trusting of people and grateful for their help. Tragically, Gunny was found laying on the street in Tijuana with a large infected gash in his forearm. He had been left there broken and alone, tossed out like trash, by the only family he ever knew. Fortunately a local rescuer was able to get him off the street and into a yard where he would be safe until help was found.

Through networking, we were made aware of this sweet boy needing help that was beyond the scope of local groups. It took a while, but, with the help of Eldad Hagar and the amazing Hope for Paws, we were finally able to get Gunny to one of our vets for assessment and treatment. While he did receive medical treatment in TJ, his leg was still grossly infected. As the infection had gained ground, the vets said they could smell the rotting tissue in his leg when he walked in the door.

Once the wound was accessed, cleaned up and cultured, examination of his leg reveal an open fracture of his ulna. Further tests showed he is also suffering from Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease. They have begun treating the infection in his leg and he is on doxycycline for the Ehrlichia. They waited until the infection cleared up before attempting to stabilize the fracture.

Gunny was a very good patient and bravely tolerated the wound debridement (removing dying skin and tissue to minimize infection) and bandage changes. In spite of what he has been through in the past, he is still a sweet boy and trusting of the vets and techs who were responsible for his care. Gunny handled everything like a real soldier and has come out the other side a sweet, bright, alert and smart boy. Now ready for adoption, could you be the lucky family who gets to call Gunny their own?
