Spike has been adopted! 01-21-2012
Spike has been to hell and back...the difference between Spike and most dogs is that he has maintained a lovely, kind, sweet disposition no matter what has been thrown his way. When we were alerted to his situation & sent someone to check on him, his condition was shocking to say the least. His tail bone was exposed by at least 6", he had been fed sugar pops (cereal) for weeks, his front elbows were swollen to the size of softballs and he was not urinating. We didn't really have any time to figure out what to do - the only thing we knew is that we had to get this sweet guy out of this horrible situation. The first thing that happened was to amputate his tail and flush his bladder. Through all of this, Spike only wanted belly rubs from anyone who was near him. With time and anti inflammatories, his elbows are a more normal size and he walks without pain, although he isn't a candidate for a marathon. He has no more issues with urinating - on a grain free kibble, his entire routine has taken a turn to awesome! Spike, with months of care from our vets and caring foster home, is now a relatively healthy boy. Yes, he has significant arthritis in his elbows but it has been well managed with inexpensive medications and reasonable exercise. He is housebroken, easy going and mellow, loves every person he meets. Spike's one drawback is that he is not good with kitties and probably not smaller animals. He is great with medium/large/xlarge dogs. He loves his ball too. He walks well on a leash and he loves to go to construction sites with his foster dad. This is one awesome dude.
The minimum adoption donation for adults is $375 and the adoption donation for puppies is $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible when permitted by law. The adoption donation provides that all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis ( i.e., puppies who will need to be altered by 6 mos old). Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
