Billie

Billie
Billie was the 15 year old relinquished at Baldwin Park for being too old. The poor thing was crying her heart out in the shelter. I was able to convince my husband to foster her. She came to me skin & bones.
It took her 3 days to wag her tail at me. After that she started having a runny nose & cough. Upon physical exam a large mass was found in her abdomen in addition to the pneumonia.

In the few days with us she was able to tame my 14 year old Whiskey, who can be a real grouch! She was too sweet! I was so happy when she started going up the stairs to sleep with us in the bedroom!

We miss her so much! She passed away peacefully in my arms. She was so attached to me that there was no way I would leave her.

We were honored to have had her in our lives.

R.I.P Billie, we love you & will never forget you!

Cassie

Cassie
On February 3, 2007, I adopted Cassie from Coastal GSR. Cassie captured my heart immediately. We bonded almost from the start, from my perspective. For her, it was when a friend’s dog attacked her. I reacted how most mothers would, throwing myself over Cassie to shield her. I know it was after this that I had earned Cassie’s trust. Cass was amazing…we were connected, soul mates. She loved car rides and playing with her tennis balls. Cassie was the perfect fit for me!
Over the last few months in 2011, Cassie, at nearly 14 years old, was losing the mobility of her hind legs. On Tuesday, November 15, 2011, the time came to put my beloved Cassie girl to rest. It was a beautiful day – just gorgeous. Before we went to the vet in the afternoon, we went for a drive to Solana Beach, where she enjoyed a visit at her Grandma Jo's house. Cassie loved being at her Grandma Jo's!

She passed that afternoon under the loving care of Dr. Switzer, with Grandma Jo and me by her side. Cass was ready, and went so peacefully. God is so good to have gifted me with such a beautiful canine companion! I can only imagine her in Heaven, happy, no longer suffering, playing with friends, and living the good life now!

Thank you to Suzanne, and the fine group at Coastal GSR. I appreciate all that you do to make this a great, worthwhile organization/community service. I will always be grateful.

Sincerely,
Dayna Darrow

Cooper

Cooper
Cooper was a beautiful dog with a personality only outsized by his heart and his love for Dave and Kris. He was more than just a dog, or just a pet – he their child, an equal member of their family. He loved camping and going for walks. But most of all he loved playing in the pool and playing fetch with his “Air-Dog.” Everyone who knew Cooper knew how sweet and loving he was. And those who didn’t know him knew how fierce and protective he was.
Cooper, you were a great friend, a good boy, a wonderful dog and a faithful companion. The only thing you couldn't say about Cooper was that he was "Just A Dog"

We will miss you!

Hailey Taggart

Hailey Taggart
July 2000 to May 2009
Hailey was our sweet girl who always brought us joy. She loved to go for walks and would always knock us over with her cute little nose as we would crouch down to get her leash. All of the kids in the neighborhood would stop us to pet and hug Hailey. She always wanted to be the first one out of the door and the first one back in. Hailey loved to go for car rides and would constantly sneak into the car while we were taking out the groceries. Coming home was always special because Hailey would greet us with a great big smile and a luxurious tail that would spin in circles. Hailey would like to sleep close to us and enjoyed weekend mornings in our bed with her head next to ours.

Hailey was a happy dog who made us very happy. We love her and will miss her every day.

Heidi

Heidi
Heidi came to me as a homeless dog on the streets in LA after she was picked up by Animal Control and was most surely to be euthanized. Thankfully CGSR stepped in and rescued her, and when I heard her story I was convinced she belonged with me. CSGR went out of their way to get her to me in Las Vegas, and she had two great years late in life, and was in her loving daddies arms when she crossed the bridge. I cannot wait to see her again!

Jennie

Jennie
Jennie was adopted by our family from Coastal when she was just 4 months old in May 2011.

She had pretty eyes, a beautiful black coat, and the biggest ears we’ve seen on a dog. They were one of her most distinguishing and beautiful features. Jennie was beautiful, loyal, protective, energetic, and had a lot of spunk. She loved to play with tennis balls (and pop them) and chase squirrels in our yard. But there is nothing she loved more than us and her buddy Blake.

Jennie was an amazing companion and a beautiful soul. She was more than family, she was our best friend. She loved life, and always had a smile on her face. Her smile lit up every room she walked into, and her loyalty and love for our family was beautiful to experience.

Sadly, she passed away recently at the age of 10 after suffering a spinal stroke and fighting a brave battle with cancer. She fought hard and courageously, all while never losing her beautiful smile. She is our inspiration and hero. She taught us to never give up, even when times are tough. We miss her so much everyday, but know that she will always be a big part of our lives and never forgotten. We love you forever Jennie! You are forever our precious Angel!

Love Jennie’s Family: Jonathan, Jessica, Pat, Cindy, and Furry Buddy Blake

What an amazing Best Friend! Thank you for 16 incredible years of adventures, crazy car rides & family road trips, visits to fast food drive-thrus, watching Wrestling PPV’s, rocking sweet tshirts and Halloween costumes and all the shenanigans with other family pups and being a partner in crime with Dom. Thank you for your unconditional love, smile, Big hugs and coming into our life!

King

King
King was adopted from Coastal German Shepherd Rescue in November 2019. He was the most
gentle, affectionate, and loving dog we have ever owned. King never met a person that he
wasn’t licking or leaning on within minutes of meeting. He showed the same excitement for his
walks and car rides every single day. After his daily walks, he turned into the definition of a
couch potato, picking out a special spot in every room of the house. He loved carrots, naps, and
having the inside of his thigh rubbed.
King taught us patience and how to be grateful for every day that we spent together. We gave
him a home, and he gave us more love and loyalty than we ever thought possible.
There was nothing more serene or peaceful than his rest, nothing more contagious or joyful
than his excitement. We were better people for having had him in our lives.
He lost his battle with cancer on September 13. 2024. He was 9 years old.

We love you, buddy. Happy trails.

Lila

Lila
Lila (knows as Twyla when she was with Coastal) gave us 4 wonderful years. She was the sweetest dog on earth and even at her age could be playful and funny. Our vet felt she was close to 14. She had regular rides in the golf cart and loved to go looking. She was quite a flirt with the male dogs and very gentle with other dogs.

We feel extremely blessed to have shared that time with her. She was definitely the diva in the house and that was just fine with us.

She was our special senior girl, always such a lady with lovely manners, so sweet and calm. She came to us from such a hard life, but her sweet gentleness never wavered and we were so glad to have her, if only for four short years. She left being held and told "good girl Lila, such a good girl." We miss her so much. She will always be loved and never forgotten.

Louie

Louie
There are no words good enough for Louie.
This was one amazing dog; he had more love in him than can be expressed. When he looked up at me, it is like he knew what I was thinking. He was there for me through some of the worst times of my life - always by my side. I could not have made it without him. It may sound strange, but Louie helped me become who I am today - he will be a part of my soul forever and ever.

To my sweet, sweet Lou-Bear: I love you so much and you are missed terribly. Thank you for making my life better! Run free my little heart; and eat all the cookies you want!

Sometimes in rescue things don't always end up the way you plan as in life. We are here and doing this for a reason and Max was just one of many. We believe that we will rescue a dog in need and all will go as planned. They will get adopted and be loved forever, but that's not always how it goes.
They may look perfectly healthy on the outside but who knows what has happened in there life to make them sick. I bonded with Max pretty fast. He was so loving and sweet and tender to me. He was one of a kind and he will always have a place in my heart.

Queenie

Queenie
There are no words to express the sorrow we feel for losing our Queenie. This beautiful girl was not only neglected by her owner, but cruelly dumped in the shelter to die. We can only imagine the confusion and sadness she felt being left in such a horrible place by the person who was suppose to love her. We tried to help you and give you the life you deserved, but that was not to be. In the short time we knew you, Queenie, your Coastal family loved you and will remember you always. RIP sweet girl, you are free of the broken body that caused you so much pain.

Rambo

Rambo
July 1, 2003 to April 13, 2011
Remembering Rambo, the most considerate, handsome and sweet dog ever. Thank you for completing our family and being the light in our lives for 7 years and 10 months. We loved those amazing family walks, playing your favorite ball which you refused to give up and those evenings watching family movies with you resting on the couch next to us and those amazing family vacations with you. Although we are profoundly saddened that this devastating cancer called hemangiosarcoma had to take you away from us at such a young age, we try to remember all the wonderful times we had and what really matters is the quality of life, not quantity. We all loved you so much and you will eternally live in our hearts.
The Shao Family

Rambo was the center of my life, projects, he was the one person I could go home and talk to. He would sit there, understanding, compassionate, and adorable as ever. His loyalty, forgiveness, and sheer joy were remarkable, under any circumstances. If I was sick, or went through one of the worst days in my life, he would always be there to comfort me; usually by lapping and drying up my tears with his velvety head and soft tongue. He remains to be my inspiration, and I cannot bear to think how such a significant family member could’ve been taken away. His presence is warm and so apparent in the house, the new void is impossible to fill. I really hope that he can see us from Rainbow Bridge and knows that we will be united again…

Riley

Riley
I didn’t pick Riley, he picked me. I had no intention of adopting a dog that day, We love dogs, would have a house full of them if we could, but with work, our daughter's school & extracurricular activities, it just didn’t seem like the right time. Then we met Riley. With his entire body pressed against the shelter gate, he said in a voice I swear only I could hear, “I promise, if you take me home I’ll be the best dog you’ve ever had.”
We saved Riley from being euthanized & for five wonderful years he kept his promise. Riley was the best dog ever & we were truly blessed to have him in our lives. He made our house a home & our family complete. As for having enough time for a pet, we found out we had more than enough, funny how there’s always time for love.

Thanks to Janice & Darryl Gary for making a generous donation to CGSR in Riley’s honor & to all who help dogs like Riley become someone’s “best dog ever.”

River Darrow

River Darrow
I adopted River from Coastal German Shepherd Rescue OC in August 2012, who had been living at Kym's kennel. River had been wandering the streets of San Bernardino and was picked up by Animal Control control in May. The day before he was to be destroyed, Coastal GSR OC rescued him. For me, River's story was about to begin six months earlier. On February 14, 2012, I took in a friend's beautiful, albeit incredibly shy, 8 yo female Shepherd/Chow mix who desperately needed a home. At the time, I wasn't ready for another dog, as my beloved Cassie Girl departed for the Rainbow Bridge in November 2011, and the loss was still too painful. Cassie was my introduction to Coastal GSR's incredible organization.Thank Heaven that my dear friend Wendy Sue knew that Lady "Narla" was the perfect one for me and encouraged me to keep her. It took getting used to each other, but soon we were totally two peas in a pod. Six months later she showed signs she needed a canine companion - that's when Coastal GSR came back into my life. Enter River ... My sister was visiting from Phoenix, so we took a trip up to visit Kym in Orange County. After two hours and meeting two other dogs we came home with River Boy, and that's where our story begins. Aside from the little snarl Narla gave River when she discovered she had to share her backseat of my truck with this stranger, their companionship was a love affair! They were soulmates, and always loved each other - they enjoyed being together whether it was napping at either ends of the couch, romping along the shoreline at Fiesta Island, going for rides in mom's truck, accompanying each other to vet appointments, walks in the neighborhood, or just chillin' at home. Everyone loved River. He was so kind, nothing rattled him, he was patient with other dogs when they would chew on him or get in his face, and he was gentle with little children. He was one of the remarkable ones. Just seeing how loving he was with Narla, you knew he was special. Narla left us in August 2018, and so it was just the two of us. We grieved together, and went on a lot of truck rides together, including two trips to Phoenix - he was a super fun traveling companion!

Since mid-February 2020, River had health and mobility issues, and in August started to decline rapidly, so the decision was made to put him to sleep. On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, Paws into Grace came to the house at 8:45 a.m. The vet was very kind and professional. During the entire process River was given the highest dignity and respect he so deserved, and he was oh so brave. Our friends came over to say their goodbyes. He enjoyed his favorite treats, including steak and potatoes from the night before. When it was time, he felt a little pinch behind his shoulders that would put him to sleep, but the delicious steak won out and he continued to enjoy his snack! Moments later, he dozed off. River left us at 9:30 a.m., very peacefully. Now he is off chasing his Lady Narla, his true love!!🐾🐾💕 River was true and loyal, faithful, a constant protector, the greatest companion, and the love of my life.

Thank you again, Coastal GSR, for rescuing these amazing creatures. There wouldn't be a River or a "River's Story" if you hadn't rescued him! Keep up the great work, and God bless you!

Rosie

Rosie
It is hard to describe how much Rosie taught me and how much I will miss her every day of my life. She was my first foster dog over nine years ago. To this day I don’t think I have ever had a foster dog that was as scared as she was. So when she finally began to trust me I just couldn’t make her start all over with someone new. She made me a full fledged member of the famous failed foster club. Rosie blossomed and turned into the most incredible dog and an ambassador for rescue dogs everywhere. She was a wonderful foster sister to countless other foster dogs and helped them adjust to life with a family. As long as I live I know I will never have another dog as special and as devoted to me as she was. Thank you for all the joy you brought to me and the wonderful memories I will always cherish. I will see you again my sweet beautiful girl, I love you.

Ryder

Ryder
From the very beginning, I viewed our friendship in philosophical, almost spiritual terms. It was no accident that our paths crossed. Ryder was meant to be my dog and I was meant to be Ryder's human. I felt very strongly that Ryder's job was to teach me things I did not know or had forgotten along the way. My job was to give Ryder the human love that had apparently eluded him. During our time together, I struggled to uncover what he came to teach.
In our last days together his lessons became clear. As I reflect on our time together, as I often will, I suspect I will uncover more of Ryder's wise gifts, but I offer them here as I know them today.
Ryder's Lessons
Human life is richer when shared with a dog.
An old dog can learn new tricks.
If you have the courage to give your love to another, it will be to another imprect being just like yourself.
God sends dogs to guide human beings to their better selves.
Life's greatest blessing is to give unqualified love and have it returned.

Thanks for everything, Big Dog.
Rest In Peace.

There are many wonderful attributes of this amazing woman. She loved God with all her heart and served him faithfully in many ways, including organizing and cooking for countless Church events. Talitha cherished the friends she made there. She had a special love for dogs, of which my GSDs benefited from her loving kindness and never ending treats when we would visit. Talitha enjoyed sitting on the front porch handing out treats to all the dogs who strolled by with their people. Those people were good friends as well as total strangers. Everyone was welcome. Pictured here is Talitha with neighbor Eddie. God bless you, Talitha.
Rest in peace.

Theodore aka "Tex"

Theodore aka "Tex"
My name is Theodore, I live in Texas, and although I am not a German Shepherd, I think that they are pretty cool. Hey, some of my best friends are German Shepherds'. They're kind of small, but they can really romp. I heard about Lil' Mercedes, and I just wanted you to know that I am rooting for her.

Thor

Thor
You came to us without a home, off the street where you did roam. We tried to find your family past, not one response left us aghast. You blended in you fit so well, a perfect match that words can't tell. You bonded tight with Simon-doo; his ties to you were noticed too. When it came his time to die, your pain was heard in your mournful cry.
Then along came Toby and Shooter as well, in your "den" you begged them dwell. You became our champion our guardian dear, with any adversity you had no fear. You loved to jump and climb and run, everything to you was loads of fun.

Though over time your pace would slow, your spirit soared and your drive would grow. You always tried to get it right; you tried so hard with all your might. And as your body began to ail, your will to please would never fail. And when that day did come for you, we saw in your eyes you knew it too. You fought the fight and gave your all, in your heart you were ten feet tall. We held you tight 'til your heart beat last, we could not believe your time had passed.

We miss the joy and play time with you, but now your play time is with Simon-doo. And when our time comes to pass, all those we've lost well see en-mass. A grand reunion is the wish of mine, to be together until the end of time. Until we meet again.

Tiber

Tiber
Our beautiful Belgian boy crossed the Rainbow Bridge on February 28, 2016 with kisses, hugs and many tears. Our eight years together went by far too fast and was not long enough. We fought your cancer with everything we had in the hopes of gaining even one more day. Your loss has left a huge void in our home and in our hearts.

We have so many happy memories of walks at the beach, car rides to nowhere, and the funny things you did. We miss your howling at the telephone, your "moonwalk," your taking up most of the bed, and your fierce protection of your home, your car, and your mama. Your big bark belied the fact that you were sweet, loving and scared of anything that squeaked or popped.

Your road to our home was difficult but it is clear we were destined to give you the love you deserved. We got so much more in return.

We know we will be in heaven when you greet us again with your smiling face and big wagging tail. We love you forever, our Tiber boy.

Tiki

Tiki
Thank you so much for bringing Tiki into our lives. There truly was something special about her. We went to Crystal Cove for walks almost every day. She ran (yes ran!) to the car and jumped in. She loved it down there. She loved the lizards and the rabbits and many times she would gaze out to the ocean. What great memories I have of her down there. At home, she would smile at me. She also curled her toes when I would get up in the morning and thump her tail super hard. She had a heart of gold, and I miss her terribly. I know she is running and jumping and having a ball in heaven. I just wish I got more time with her.

Tori

Tori
In 2012, Dee Dee was described as a “ball chasin’, toy lovin’ girl” on Coastal GSR’s website. Tori (renamed because of her loyalty) delivered on those promises. When I saw her bio in 2012, I fell in love and became obsessed with her. Tori was our shadow for 11 years, and never turned down a good walk. She was a relentless ball-chaser and would take her ball up to complete strangers, drop it in front of them, and stare the ball down waiting for a nice long throw. Even with the huge prey drive, she got along well with her numerous feline siblings.

Tori and her GSD stepsister traveled with her humans all over California and Arizona, in sunshine and snow, and was the best traveling partner. One of my last requests was for her to send us another dog. Because of her loyalty and intuition, she has delivered on that as well. We all miss you, Tori, and look forward to seeing you at the rainbow bridge. Thank you for the Tori Stories – there are enough to last a lifetime. Thank you, Coastal (Miley, Gary) for the perfect match, and thank you, Tori, for 11 years of pure joy.

Worf

Worf
Love comes in all breeds, sizes and shapes and the greatest givers of unconditional love are dogs.
Worf was a Mexican street rescue and one couldn't find a more loving, fun and dedicated pupster. He was very protective and had the loyalty and spirit of a German Shepherd Dog in his Poodle mix body.

Worf was taken from us much too soon; he was around 7 years old when he died, and we had him only three years. Years on the streets of Mexico had taken their toll on his health. He enriched our life beyond measure.
We now have two more rescues and love them both.

Thanks to Coastal and all of the dedicated people there and with other dog rescue organizations; you have our love and respect also.

Yancy

Yancy
We adopted our Yancy on 02.06.2010 when he was 4+ yrs. old. He was our first GSD and what a love affair it was. He was a mama's boy through and through and dad had to earn his #2 spot.
Yancy was a downtown San Diego condo dog most of his life and every day on our walks someone would say what a beautiful dog he was. He had many furry friends at the dog park where he chased the ball and dribbled it.
When we moved away there was not a suitable dog park nearby. That's when Yancy discovered squirrels and play ring around the trees with them.

When he was 10+yrs old he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and many herniated
discs. Due to his age we didn't opt for surgery. That started 3+ yrs of weekly laser treatments and monthly acupuncture to keep him going. And then came the time when walking became harder and his quality of life was greatly diminished. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 10.25.2018 in our arms.
Happy squirreling Yancy!
We loved him and we will always miss him.

Zach

Zach
In memory of Zach, who worked his way very quickly into Jessi's and Don's hearts, and left all of us way too soon. Zach, you are missed.

Zoe

Zoe
In loving memory of Zoe (Sophie), who died on 1/19/17.

Our beloved GSD "wanna be" was adopted from Coastal GSR on June 10, 2006 when she was known as Sophie.
Sweetest companion and loving friend. Survivor of cross country moves. Known for your one floppy ear. Breaker of glass storm doors in pursuit of squirrels. Avid walker, runner, hunter. Playful until the end. May there be lots of squirrels and rabbits to chase, face licks, butt rubs, and magic boxes (dishwashers, trash cans, and boxes of treats) to explore across the rainbow bridge. You will always have a special place in our hearts.
