Cheyenne has been adopted! 05-16-2023

Female German Shepherd Dog about 3-5 years old. Good with kids. Gets along with other dogs.

Sometimes it’s hard to tell a dog (or dog’s) story and give all of the feelings and emotions surrounding it. Cody and Cheyenne are those dogs with that kind of story!

Our first introduction to them came via a phone call from a kind soul who works in a rural area at a large shipping warehouse. She called asking for help as she had been feeding two wayward German Shepherds for many many months and hadn’t been able to get close enough to them to bring them into safety. We talked with her and helped her to develop a routine of feeding times at the same familiar spot. We set up a plan to come out and assess the situation and see if by chance we would be able to see the dogs and possibly get leashes on them.

Arriving at night, (since that is when the helper was able to feed daily) we were greeted by a pack of coyotes who also inhabit the field that the German Shepherds had been living in. After they dispersed, we saw the male German Shepherd as he ventured up to the top of the slope to the feeding station. As soon as he sensed new people in the area, he communicated to the female German Shepherd that it was not safe to come out. We observed the two dogs over the course of a couple of hours as they navigated the field, communicating to each other and watching us. It quickly became evident that the area was so vast that we would need to use humane traps to bring them in safely. Traps were set and we waited. Within two hours, both of the dogs were in the traps eating the rotisserie chicken we had set them up with!
Once the traps were secured, we loaded them up and brought them straight to the kennel.

Day 1 was rough as they were encountering all kinds of new experiences. Just walking out of the trap was hard as they had lived on their own for so very long- 10 months that we know of! Little by little, day by day, they have begun to come out of their shell. Instead of fear as we approach their kennels, we see wagging tails and excited faces! They are both the sweetest, most loving dogs. They are smart beyond words and wise beyond their years. They are both about 4 years old- likely siblings. They both love their daily walks, have decided that petting is wonderful and they will take treats from you all day long!

Cody and Cheyenne can be adopted separately or as a pair. They are both very friendly with children and delight in being with people.

The minimum adoption donation for adults is $375 and the adoption donation for puppies is $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible when permitted by law. The adoption donation provides that all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis ( i.e., puppies who will need to be altered by 6 mos old). Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
