Kingsley has been adopted! 08-17-2013

Male German Shepherd Dog /Retriever mix about 3-5 years old. Good with kids. Gets along with other dogs.

Goofy and good-natured, this boy loves belly rubs and a good scratch around the neck! He came to us from a high kill shelter on his very last day and has charmed his way into our hearts. He likes other playful dogs and is quite the comedian. We found out that Kingsley had two bad hips so we worked to get him into a foster home as soon as we could so he could have much needed surgery. He is young enough that he can have surgery now to correct the problem and live a long and pain free life. He has had surgery on one side and sailed thru the recovery process with very little down time. We are raising the funds to have the second surgery and then he will be good as new - only better!

He is currently in a foster home with 3 other dogs and does well with new dogs when properly introduced. He doesn't know that he has a rickety back end... he plays all day as if he were the court jester! Kingsley is very affectionate although like a lot of GSD's he can be a bit pushy about it. He really likes to let you know when he wants a head scratch or ear rub! He's good around children although I wouldn't recommend very small children as he simply doesn't know his own size and strength and tends to knock them over. Kingsley is still young and has some maturing to do and would really benefit from the patience and guidance of an owner familiar with strong, pushy GSD's that just need to be reminded now and then who's in charge.

Update:

Kingsley has had his 2nd hip surgery and again sailed thru the recovery and rehab process with very little downtime. He is currently working his way up to longer and longer walks but if you ask him, he's perfectly fine and there's nothing wrong with his hips! He runs and plays with his foster sisters, wrestles with them, races across the yard, jumps in & out of the raised flower beds - generally behaving as a typical young shepherd! He's perfected his housetraining, he's learned to take food/treats by hand sooo gently it's really sweet, he's so good with his crate training he puts himself to bed at night going into his crate and waiting till someone comes to close the door for him, he's learned all the house rules like no counter-surfing, no getting on the furniture, not to interfere with the other dogs eating bowls, etc. Now we're working on how to catch treats - no one ever taught him how to catch food/treats! He's kinda clumsy at this but he's trying! He's learned the commands, sit, and stay (as it relates to the front door being open - he won't just bolt out), and when allowed out front he will stay in the front yard and not wander off.

Kingsley would do best in a single dog home or in a home with a submissive playful dog. He is particular about the dogs he likes and can be loud and obnoxious when meeting new dogs for the first time. He isn't dog aggressive just picky. He has a lot of character, is very endearing and will make someone a wonderful companion dog.

The minimum adoption donation for adults is $375 and the adoption donation for puppies is $500. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is tax deductible when permitted by law. The adoption donation provides that all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis ( i.e., puppies who will need to be altered by 6 mos old). Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.
